A wise VC once told me,“Focus on creating value for everyone else, and watch it come back to you.”
Which was great advice, and inspiring, but also easier said than done.
See last year I decided I was going to pursue a career in remote consulting – something I’d always wanted to do. I was grinding everyday – creating blog docks, sharing decks, and finding speaking engagements – yet none of these things seemed to be moving the needle.
I still believed in myself, and I knew I could deliver on my offer, but I just couldn’t seem to find the right people to make it click…
That’s where Hustle Con comes in. I had been instantly hooked on the idea of a Bay area conference that was focused on business tactics instead of the normal engineering/code stuff, so I bought a ticket with a single goal: present my value to as many people as possible.
That meant no selling myself, no “getting” anything. Just meeting and talking with as many people as possible. And I did it. I spent half my day in the lobby talking with founders and VPs, and actually ended up giving them tips and advice for their growth efforts.
And it worked. After months of spinning my wheels, I closed my first ever remote consulting client right there in the conference lobby.
Not only that, but within 3 months of Hustle Con, I was able to increase my fees by 100%, and 6 months later by 500%. The more confidence I got from each deal, the more I seemed to close. Within 9 months of working remotely, I had accomplished my goal: I crossed the 6 figure mark.
And it all started with that first deal at Hustle Con.
Consulting was a wild ride, and I’ll always be grateful to Hustle Con for giving me the opportunity to meet and network with incredible, risk-taking individuals who both embody and recognize value, passion and hustle.
Every year the speakers are amazing, and I can’t wait to go again this year. And for all the first timers reading, I wish you all the most successful, productive and fun experience. It’s truly a life changing experience.
